New in Town? Try Cruisin' the Ave

Current city laws won't let us cruise down Yakima Avenue like we used to do back in the day--except on certain nights during the summer. The next one is coming up this weekend.

Cruise the Ave Is an Old Yakima Favorite Past Time

Cruise the Ave is like when you were a lot younger and the cool thing to do would be to drive your car up and down the main street downtown. When I was a kid, cruising up and down the main street downtown was a special time that gave my friends and I the chance to flex and show off.

We were either trying to show off our friend's ride or ourselves back then and times still haven't changed. These days, people are busy showing off their LED lights on bikes and big MACK trucks or hydraulics on those hoopties!

Some people will pull up to the side of the road with their families and unload a bunch of lawn chairs with some snacks to watch all the cars and vehicles passing by.

When to Arrive

The event is from 7 to 11 p.m. along Yakima Avenue in downtown. If you plan to watch from the sidewalks on your lawn chairs or in the back of somebody's truck bed, I'd start picking out your parked spot no later than 6:55 p.m.

I've never driven my car in a Cruise the Ave here in Yakima, mostly because sitting in traffic makes me want to scream, but if you'd like to participate, be ready to ride that night by 7!
