Yakima City Rolls Out Adopt-A-Block Program to Beautify Local Neighborhood
It's time to help beautify local neighborhoods. You've heard of the Adopt a Highway program so now it's time to get involved in a new Adopt-A-Block program in the city of Yakima.
THE CITY IS PARTNERING TO GET THINGS DONE
A press release from the city says Yakima partnered with Yakima's Habitat for Humanity to create the program in which residents can adopt a city block from areas who wish to be adopted and receive volunteer assistance. Yakima City Manager Vicki Baker says the program is in the initial phase and will grow in the future. “We are looking for community members who are interested in being ‘champions’ for blocks." Adopt a Block groups agree to conduct 4 cleanup activities each year for 2 years. The press release says groups can also hold monthly cleanup activities, weekly or biweekly walkthroughs of blocks and other periodic cleanup activities.

MAYBE YOU'LL BE CLEANING OR BUILDING
She says the champions would coordinate and lead work in a specific neighborhood to get things done. The release says once blocks are officially adopted Habitat for Humanity will also provide additional instructions that will help you keep area blocks or neighborhoods clean. Traditionally the state program where people adopted a highway volunteers would focus on the conditions and pick up trash. Baker says the same idea will soon be transferred to area neighborhoods.
LETTING YOU KNOW SO YOU CAN PLAN TO BE INVOLVED
Baker says it'll take some time to get the program up and running with a slow roll out expected. She says the city just wants to get people thinking about the program and how residents can help out their neighbors.
