In Japan, dancing wasn't allowed without a special 'dancing permit' until just recently when a 67-year-old ban was lifted.

The reason for the ban was that dance halls were often associated with prostitution in the past. They figured if they banned dancing, prostitution would go away as well, I guess. To be honest, I'm not sure why, but  dancing (and prostitution) always find a way to continue. At any rate, dancing was banned until just the other day unless clubs had a special dancing permit. Even with the permit, all dancing had to stop by midnight.

But Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto decided enough was enough and started a campaign to lift the ban. He was able to get 150,000 signatures from people who agreed.

This kicks into gear next week. Good on you, Japan! A step in the right direction.
