Hip-hop woke up to tragic news on Sunday morning when Jarad Higgins, known professionally as Juice Wrld, died after suffering a seizure inside Chicago’s Midway airport late Saturday night. He was 21 years old.
Just days before his passing, the Illinois native went on Instagram to share news that he'd be celebrating his birthday all week. Midway through the celebrations, members of his crew documented the trip into Chicago via Instagram, showing Juice sitting peacefully on a private jet.
Known for his unique marriage of pop-punk melodies with quick-witted bars, Juice Wrld’s profile rose fast once he started posting songs recorded in his bedroom via his cellphone to SoundCloud in 2015. His knack for combining raw emotion with fiery hooks made him one of the first Soundcloud rappers to cross over to the pop mainstream with hits like "All Girls Are the Same," "Lucid Dreams" and "Lean Wit Me."
By the time his debut album, Goodbye & Good Riddance, was released via Interscope in 2018, it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Working at a tireless pace for the following year, he continued cementing his position as a young legend with the Future-assisted Wrld On Drugs LP and 2019’s hit-packed Death Race for Love. Juice appears on the cover of XXL Magazine's Fall 2019 issue—his story is a revealing snapshot of his life up until that point.
Dealing frequently with themes of drugs, mental health and mortality in his lyrics, the artist also released the song "Legends" last year to mourn the deaths of his late contemporaries XXXTentacion and Lil Peep. On the track, he delivered the now-eerie bars, "All legends fall in the making/Sorry truth, dying young, demon youth/What's the 27 Club?/We ain't making it past 21."
