A judge has ruled that Katy Perry improperly copied her Juicy J-assisted song, "Dark Horse" from Christian rapper Flame.

According to a report The Associated Press published Monday (July 29), a jury's unanimous decision led to a verdict in favor of Flame, whose 2008 song "Joyful Noise" is at the center of the lawsuit. In the suit, it's alleged that Perry and her team stole the rhythmic loop from Flame's song and used it for her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single "Dark Horse" without permission.

Flame, born Marcus Gray, wrote "Joyful Noise" with Lecrae, Emmanuel Lambert and Chike Ojukwu. They first filed the lawsuit back in 2014, the year after Perry released "Dark Horse."

Perry's lawyer Christine Lepera disagreed with the suggestion that Perry had stolen anything from "Joyful Noise." “They’re trying to own basic building blocks of music, the alphabet of music that should be available to everyone,” she said during closing arguments last Thursday.

Perry isn't the only one who will be held accountable. Producers Dr. Luke, Max Martin, Henry Walter, songwriter Sarah Hudson and Juicy J, who spits a verse on the track, have all been found liable in the case. Capitol Records, Warner Music Group, Kobalt Publishing and Kasz Money Inc. are also listed as defendants in the lawsuit

Now that the verdict has been reached, jurors will decide how much Perry and her defendants owe in damages to the "Joyful Noise" songwriters.

As of this report, there's no confirmation that Perry will appeal the verdict. Check out both songs below to listen for similarities.
