Kevin Fret, known as the first openly gay Latin trap artist, was shot and killed Thursday morning (Jan. 10) in Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico, CNN reported earlier today (Jan. 11).

The 24-year-old artist was shot multiple times while he was on his motorcycle around 5:20 a.m. and later died at the Medical Center of Río Piedras.

As of now, authorities haven't determined a motive for the killing of Fret, who had been an LGBT advocate before his death. The Puerto Rico Trans Youth Coalition said his murder could be called a hate crime.

Before his death, Fret was a star on the rise. His latest video, one for the song “Soy Así," has garnered over 700,000 views. In a statement given to Inside Edition, Fret’s manager, Eduardo Rodriguez, described the artist as a “big-hearted dreamer” and an “artistic soul.”

“His passion was music, and he still had a lot left to do. This violence should stop. There are no words to describe our emotions and the pain that it causes us to know that a person with so many dreams has to go,” Rodriguez said.

XXL sends condolences to the family of Kevin Fret. May he rest in peace.
