One Dead One Under Arrest After Mabton Shooting
Yakima County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a murder reported Sunday at a home in Mabton. Deputies say they were called to the 5300 block of Sunnyside Mabton Road where they found a 30-year-old man dead from a gunshot wound. An investigation found 30-year-old Mathew Rand of Grandview entered the home uninvited as he was carrying a gun in his waistband. Deputies say the homeowner, 47-year-old Jon Ray Bonewell Jr. and Rand went outside where a fight started. They say Bonewell then shot Rand after he refused to drop his gun. That's what the investigation at the scene found. But it took an odd twist after authorties began speaking with the homeowner, Bonewell.
The homeowner was arrested after speaking with authorities
During an interview with authorities Bonewell admitted he was a convicted felon who was not supposed to be in possession of a firearm. He also admitted selling stolen items for Rand and that he believed Rand was upset with him for not selling enough stolen property. He told authorities he believed Rand was going to shoot him and that he feared for his life when Rand entered his home. Regardless of his concern Deputies arrested Bonewell on a charge of 2nd Degree Murder and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. Bonewell is expected to face charges Monday in Yakima County Superior Court. He's being held in the Yakima County jail.
