Crisis Manager Wouldn’t Want His Daughter Alone With R. Kelly

R. Kelly's crisis manager, Darrell Johnson, said that he would never leave his daughter alone with an accused pedophile even though he's publicly defending one.

On Monday (July 22), Johnson appeared on CBS This Morning and told co-host Gayle King that he wouldn’t leave his daughter with the disgraced R&B singer. King asked, "You have a 20-something-year-old daughter. Would you allow her to be alone with--?"

"Absolutely not," Johnson interrupted King in mid-sentence. "R. Kelly?" King finished.

Johnson then added, "I would not leave my daughter with anyone who's accused of pedophilia."

King pressed further and asked Johnson would he leave his daughter alone with Kelly specifically. "I would not leave my daughter with anyone that's accused of being a pedophile. I would not," he said.

Johnson also insisted that it was not a “contradiction” for him to publicly defend his client who is being accused of alleged sexual misconduct with underage girls. "I wouldn't leave my daughter with anyone—I'm going to say it again—that's accused of being a pedophile," he stated once again.

Earlier this month, Kelly was arrested on 18 new federal counts, including child pornography, kidnapping and obstruction of justice, among other charges. The embattled singer faces 195 years in prison on the Chicago charges alone. Kelly has repeatedly denied all allegations.

Johnson is also concerned with Kelly's mental state as he sits in a Chicago jail. "[He's] a mess right now. He's afraid, he's scared, he's isolated," Johnson said.

When asked if Kelly is on suicide watch, Johnson responded, "I would assume that he is ... Nobody wants to be locked down 24 hours, no TV. He can't read and write, so he can't read a book. It's almost as if he's already been—a jury has convicted him."

Johnson added that Kelly could also harm himself in prison. "When you're in the state of mind Mr. Kelly is in right now, any person, including myself and you, would probably want the authorities to be cautious of what has taken place," he said.
