Last night, the official Into the Spider-Verse account tweeted a mysterious tease, writing “Something's up. Our Spidey sense is tingling. RT if yours is, too.”

Almost 25,000 retweets later, now we know what’s going on — an Into the Spider-Verse 2, which has an official release date, a little over two years away, on April 8, 2022.

Original Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller both tweeted about the news, with Miller putting definitively and succinctly “We’re coming back.”

Into the Spider-Verse wasn’t the biggest hit in the history of the Spider-Man movie franchise; it made about $375 million worldwide, compared to $1.1 billion that Spider-Man: Far From Home grossed earlier this summer. But it was an enormous critical hit, and an awards winner too — it took home the Best Animated Feature award from the Oscars, among many other prizes.

There were rumors about possible Spider-Verse spinoffs as well, including a movie for Spider-Gwen. At the moment there are no details about what characters will appear (although I’d say Miles Morales is a pretty safe bet). The good news is, the best Spider-Man movie ever made is getting a sequel, and the guys who put the first one together are involved.
