Magneto has definitely seen better days than in the latest ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ photo.

FOX’s Bryan Singer-directed X-Men drama doesn’t have a name, or even many confirmed characters, at least until now. Recent Gotham alum Jamie Chung will suit up as Marvel’s Blink, who Singer had previously showcased in Days of Future Past.

I’m an old enough nerd to remember when the first X-Men movie came out in theaters. At that time, comic books were not the number one driver of all things in popular culture. Bryan Singer’s X-Men certainly featured all the comic’s beloved heroes and villains, but there did seem like there was a concerted effort to tamp down some of their comic-book-ness. Everyone dressed in black. There was no spandex. The story was grounded in weighty real-world themes like prejudice and vengeance. It was the X-Men you knew, but watered down just a bit. It was a rum and coke, not a shot of gin. X-Men: Apocalypse, in comparison, looks like a bottle of Beefeater.

Without a great adversary, what good is a superhero? Without someone to punch in the face, Batman would just be some rich schmuck driving around in a weird-looking tank. Without someone on the receiving end of his shield, Captain America would just hang out at the V.F.W. all day. So let’s celebrate the villains. On Monday, the New York man who uploaded an unfinished and unreleased “workprint” of ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ to the internet in March of 2009 was sentenced to serve one year in prison.

Much like the newer Wolverine movie, this is more of a prequel back when Professor X and Magneto were BFFs. Looks phenomenal!
