Kristen Stewart Co-Authored a Scientific Paper About Artificial Intelligence, Of Course
Film and technology have always been closely linked, but these days they’re beginning to influence each other in ways we can’t even foresee. Take Kristen Stewart’s first directorial effort Come Swim, for instance, which will be premiering at the Sundance Film Festival: Stewart, her producer, and an engineer teamed up to use her movie to author a research paper about artificial intelligence. Why not?
Viola Davis and Denzel Washington Shine Once Again in the New ‘Fences’ Trailer
Has the word “Oscar” been thrown around enough lately in regards to Denzel Washington and Viola Davis’s Fences? No? We can keep saying it some more? Good. The latest trailer for the film, adapted from August Wilson’s play and directed by Washington himself, shows off the kind of vibrant acting that these two won Tonys for in the first place.
John Boyega Wears a Cool Jacket in ‘Pacific Rim: Maelstrom’ Set Photos
Pacific Rim: Malestrom’s title was just confirmed by John Boyega himself, and now he’s filming the mecha vs. monsters sequel in Sydney, Australia on a very post-apocalyptic-looking set. Some set photos came out today of the movie’s production, and Boyega is sporting a very cool jacket and an even cooler haircut.
Forest Whitaker Joining ‘LAbyrinth,’ That Movie About Biggie and Tupac Starring Johnny Depp
Remember that movie about the murders of Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur that Johnny Depp is in, for some reason? Depp is playing a detective who tries (and, obviously, fails) to crack both cases, and Forest Whitaker has just joined the cast as Depp’s journalist buddy who is also interested to find out what actually happened to the hip hop icons.
‘O.J.: Made in America’ Director in Talks to Helm Jonah Hill’s Richard Jewell Movie
O.J. Made in America was one of the best longform documentaries of this year, and stunned audiences with its extremely in-depth case study of O.J. Simpson as a product of the racism and prejudice of his time. Now the producer and director of that documentary, Ezra Edelman, is in talks to direct a movie based on Richard Jewell, the security guard whose life was ruined after he was reported to be a suspect of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics Centennial Park bombings.
‘RED’ Short Film Teaser: Cate Blanchett Is a Spider-Woman Who Eats Men After She Has Sex With Them
Del Kathryn Barton’s popularity amongst the experimental and high-art circles of Australia hasn’t yet made waves in the U.S. quite yet, but her next project might allow her to do just that. The trailer for her new experimental short film RED debuted online last week, and if you’re a fan of either Cate Blanchett or spiders, Barton’s this is for you. (If you’re a fan of Cate Blanchett and spiders, book your ticket to Adelaide right now immediately.)
Darth Vader Is All Over the New ‘Rogue One’ International Trailer
As the Rogue One trailers keep rolling out, they get increasingly more Darth Vader-y. In the first few, we had that shot of the back of his helmet. Then, in the next couple, a new shot of him talking to Ben Mendelsohn’s Director Krennic. Now, the most recent international trailer actually starts off with his “Imperial March” theme and includes a short soundbite of that chilling breathing noise.
Johnny Depp Will Star in the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Sequel, Has a Cameo in the First One
No scandal can keep an actor down for long, as is the case with Johnny Depp, who has signed on to co-star in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel (which will be the second in the five-film franchise). But that’s not all — apparently, he also has a very small role in the first installment, coming out this November.
There Are Secret Messages Hidden in the ‘Rogue One’ IMAX Standees
It was only a matter of time before an enemy as insidious (something something Darth Sidious joke) as the Empire of the Star Wars movies began to invade the real world. Ahead of the premiere of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, IMAX theaters across the country are setting up large standees to advertise the movie — and to pump our brains full of subliminal messages. Apparently, there are hidden codes and phrases amongst the text written on the posters, and now we know what some of them mean.
‘Bride of Frankenstein’ Movie Will Be About Female Liberation, Says Screenwriter David Koepp
Universal’s monster movie reboots are gaining traction, and with The Mummy set to relaunch the franchise next year, the studio has its eye on the next set of films in the classic monster cinematic universe. One of these is Bride of Frankenstein, which doesn’t currently have a release date, but does have a script penned by Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp. According to him, his version of the tale is all about female liberation.
‘Interstellar’ Visual Effects Specialist Paul Franklin to Direct ‘Resurface’
It’s not too rare for those more involved in the work behind-the-scenes to step up to the director’s chair. Barry Sonnenfeld, the DP of much of the Coen brothers’ earlier work, made his directorial debut with The Addams Family movie and became the boss of True Blood, and Danger: Diabolik and Black Sunday director Mario Bava started off as a cinematographer. Now, Paul Franklin, the visual effects supervisor for game-changing movies like Interstellar and Inception is trying his hand at directing with the upcoming action-thriller Resurface.
Elisabeth Moss May or May Not Have Killed Her Husband in ‘The Free World’ Trailer
Elisabeth Moss has become a skillful indie actress since her stint on AMC’s Mad Men, taking on films like Listen Up Philip, High-Rise, and Queen of Earth. We’ll have to wait for the second season of Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake to see her on our TV screens again, but her new Sundance drama The Free World should tide us over until then.
