Authorities Identify Suspect Shot by Yakima Police
Officials from the Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit have identified a man shot by police on Sunday in downtown Yakima as 21-year-old Moises Bello-Medina of Yakima. Yakima police have also identified the officers involved in the incident;
- Officer Chris Taylor (15 years of experience)
- Officer Adam Schilperoort (8 years of experience)
- Officer Dylan Alte (8 months experience)
Police say Bello-Medina was treated and released from the hospital
Bello-Medina was released from the hospital on Tuesday and booked into the Yakima County jail. He faces felony domestic violation of a no contact order, 1st Degree Unlawful possession of a firearm, Theft of a motor vehicle, attempt to elude law enforcement and 2nd Degree felony Assault.
Yakima Police Capt. Jay Seely says police were first called to the 1200 block of South Ninth Avenue at about 10:45 am Sunday for a report of a man with a shotgun and a report he'd fired at a home in the area. Officers were also told the man stole a vehicle from a home in the neighborhood.
Police say Bello-Medina was known to have mental problems
Soon after arriving in the area officers started to follow the Bello-Medina in the stolen car in the downtown area. He then started driving the wrong way on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and in the area of Fifth Avenue and MLK Blvd. the Bello-Medino jumped out of the stolen vehicle and pointed a shotgun at officers. Officers fired at the him while at the same time another officer in a vehicle struck Bello-Medina with his patrol car. Bello-Medina was treated at a Yakima hospital and released.
Two officers are now on administrative leave
As a result of the shooting two officers, an officer in training and a senior officer have been placed on administrative leave during an investigation of the incident.
Officers from the Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit will handle the investigation. The unit is made up of investigators from different agencies in the valley.
No officers were injured.
