I don't care how cold it is, I'm always down for ice cream. In fact, if you attended Davis High School in the mid 90s or YVC in the early 2000 and were a female you were probably smitten by my ever so cleaver pick up line of "Hey, we should grab some ice cream sometime." Why did I use this pick-up line? Because even if the date sucked I still had ice cream. Here are my top 5 places to get ice cream, or ice cream like treats, in Yakima.

    Ron's Taco and Burger

    Corner of 16th and Lincoln

First and foremost has to be Ron's Taco and Burger. Why? Because they're a thousand feet tall, that's why. The sheer joy you feel in your soul takes you back 20 years when they had you this monstrosity. You can go with Vanilla, Chocolate or get it swirled. I usually just opt for plain ol' vanilla. Ron's has other ice cream available, too, including sundaes that come in 44oz pop cups. I've never been brave enough to try that yet. Maybe next time.

    Baskin Robbins

8th and Summitview, on South 1st and 38th and Nob Hill

There's good reason why Baskin Robbins is so popular, because they're good. They have a nice variety that offers something for anyone including frozen yogurt and low fat varieties. My favorite is the margarita ice which, by technical standards isn't a true ice cream, but I don't care, it's good. I'm always down for a Mocha Blast as well.

    TSS Yogurt

    40th and Summitview (now closed)

How dare TSS Yogurt haunt me each and every day. I can literally see it from my office window as it's right across the street. I like this place because it's kind of a 'cafeteria-style' selection. You grab your cup, fill it as high as you want with several flavors to choose from, then pile as many toppings as you'd like. For toppings they have cookie crumbles, cheesecake pieces, fruit, candies, pumps of chocolate and caramel - even gummy worms. Then you take it to the counter and pay for it at only .42 cents an ounce. In the realm of frozen yogurt, this is extremely inexpensive. Every time I've gone there I got a good amount for me to be satisfied and have never paid more than $4. They're brand new to Yakima so make sure and pop in for a visit.

    Miner's

    South First

Miner's is legendary for their larger-than-life burgers, but they have some of the best milkshakes in town as well. My personal favorite is the marshmallow shake. I know they have several to choose from and I'm sure they're all good, but I order marshmallow each and every time. The ice cream cones and sundaes are fine, too. Again, to me, it's all about the marshmallow shake. I've driven across town for just that and I know I'll do it again. It's what I'm probably doing right now as you're reading this.

    Arctic Circle

    40th and Nob Hill

I don't eat fast food too often but, if my kids had it their way, we'd eat it every day. Arctic Circle is conveniently on the corner of 40th and Nob Hill which is an intersection I drive through just about every day so for the sake of convenience I'll make it work more often than I should. The good thing about going to Arctic Circle, however, are their killer 'Over the Top' shakes. They call them milkshakes, but to me they're way too thick to enjoy through a straw. With a handy spoon at my side I can order a large one and that works great for my kids and I. Again, a huge selection to choose from. I don't have a favorite so I order something different each time. The Banana Cream Pie is what I ordered last time and is highly recommended.
