Every year the number grows. Today the city is short 23 Officers.

Officers made 857 traffic stops during the week, not as many as the 923 stops the week before but police say they're busy trying to control traffic. 393 drivers were ticketed.

With a shortage of Officers police say they can't afford to place officers sitting idle to watch specific intersections.

Good news; Yakima Police say the number of people getting in crashes by running red lights is falling every week.

Yakima Police continue searching for speeding drivers in the city as the traffic speed patrols continue.

In 2021 the Yakima Police Department made a presentation to the city about installing Red Light cameras to help put a stop to the problem.

Now the city of Union Gap is having the same problems.

Police Capt. Jay Seely says the fact that people are still not obeying traffic laws by not stopping for red lights is one of the strongest reasons why they continue the patrols.

Last year was a deadly year in the city of Yakima and the Chief of Yakima Police wanted action taken.

Currently Seely says he's divided the city into four areas assigning a Lieutenant to each area.

Capt. Jay Seely says Officers are expected to make 3 to 4 traffic stops everyday to slow drivers and send a message that traffic is being monitored in Yakima.
