The Stand Down Benefits Fair is designed to foster a sense of community among veterans.

Officials at the Yakima County Veterans Program say they work closely with veterans who seek help at the office. Many are looking for cold winter gear and food.

This year's event is set for October 21 in the Yakima Valley Sundome from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Congress designated May as National Military Appreciation Month in 1999 to make sure the nation has a chance to publicly show appreciation for those in the military.
