Something to Celebrate This 4th of July As WA State Nears Its 133rd Bday

I'm pretty sure it was a super hot day across the hemisphere when America became a certified country in 1776. It's hard to believe that was 246 years ago. When you think of it that way, the United States of America isn't really that old. Our neighbors to the north, Canada, are even younger as a country than we are (they only gained independence from The Queen in 1867).

As we kick back with an extra day or two off of work this 4th of July holiday weekend, it made me wonder when did Washington state become a part of the U.S. of A. November 1889 was the month when the Pacific Northwestern territories were officially split up into states, but July 4, 1889 is a special date of significance, too.

On July 4, 1889, in the city of Olympia, Washington, “seventy-five men [were] elected to the State Constitutional Convention [including] 21 lawyers, 13 farmers, 6 merchants, 6 doctors, 5 bankers, 4 cattlemen, 3 teachers, 2 real-estate agents, 2 editors, 2 hop farmers, 2 loggers, 2 lumbermen, 1 minister, 1 surveyor, 1 fisherman, and 1 mining engineer.” These fellows were the ones who became the first Washington state legislature, our first Washington state Congress.

We all know about the influential grunge scene of Seattle that brought the end of hair metal at the dawn of the 1990s. But did you know even more artists have called Washington home? A lot of these artists come from Seattle but some come from Spokane and even the Tri-Cities.

What If Yellowstone Characters Were Washington Towns?
