Thousands of red and black flags line North 40th Avenue at Chesterley Park in Yakima representing those who have been infected by COVID-19 and those who have died. The idea for the flags came from Leola Reeves who says the display is a way to highlight the pandemic that's impacted the community. Reeves says she came up with the idea and contacted the Yakima Health District which used State Department of Health funding to pay for the flags that are marked with silhouettes. Each red flag represents a person with the virus. The black flags represent those who have died.
For Reeves it's personal. Her stepfather was diagnosed with the virus but he survived. However she says he now has lung damage as a result.
Reeves says she's met a lot of people through a Facebook page she created to talk about COVID-19 called "I love someone with COVID-19."
