Emmy Rossum stopped by Chelsea Handler's Netflix talk show Chelsea to expound on the recent harassment she received online from Donald Trump supporters who have spewed anti-Semitic vitriol at her on Twitter.

The Jewish actress spoke with Handler about the importance of calling out hateful rhetoric, saying she refuses to maintain complacency when targeted with bigoted, threatening language.

"I don’t generally interact with people who are, say, trolls on Instagram," she said, "but if someone makes a specific threat against me or against someone and I'm at-replied on it, I think that standing idly by and being silent is in and of itself just as bad."

Rossum continued, saying she hopes people from all walks of life can ignore their differences and unite against hate.

"You know, walking around New York there were swastikas in places on schools, there were different things that you would see and it was very upsetting," she said. "I think that there’s a need to come together. I think hate on either side of the aisle — it’s not about who you voted for or what you believe. It’s about common decency, it’s about decorum, it’s about correctness and it’s about kindness.

"And I think it’s so important to come together in that way, and that applies to being a woman, it applies to being Muslim, it applies to being a Jew, it applies to being Hispanic, it applies to being disabled, it applies to being LGBT," the Shameless actress continued. "It applies to so many different things that we really need to work harder and do better."
