Alright, so not the whole state, not yet anyway. Lawmakers in the Golden State (notice, not the flamin’ hot orange state) are proposing a bill that targets food dyes, and yeah, that includes some of the ingredients found in Flamin’ Hot Cheetos.

Just when you thought that snack food was getting the attention it deserves, especially with the release of the film “Flamin’ Hot,” this news is like a kick right in the Cheetos!

You can tell by now that I’m a fan of these snack foods, and I’m also a fan of people making decisions for themselves.

Lawmakers in California, though, argue that the food dyes blue 1 & 2, red 40, green 3, yellow 5 & 6, and titanium dioxide (a coloring agent), all used to help color and tint foods, drinks, medicines, and supplements, can harm children. Assembly Bill 2316 aims to block products with those chemicals from being in schools.

If the bill passes, will those chips (along with Doritos, Takis, M&M's, Sour Patch Kids, and Mountain Dew) stop being sold in school vending machines? Yep.

Does it mean that if you buy a variety box of chips at the store and give them to your kid to take for his lunch from home, they will be taken away? Not sure. It’s hard to imagine that the hall monitor will soon become the Cheetos monitor, but who knows?

Jesse Gabriel, who introduced the bill, has repeatedly said that this is not a food ban in California, and it does not ban Flamin’ Hot Cheetos or any snack foods. For that mindset, excellent.

But what if a different lawmaker thinks it shouldn’t stop at schools? Should the government be able to ban stuff like this, even when a different arm (the FDA) has already approved it?

Where will it end, and to what ends will it go? I’ll crack open a bag of fiery red ones and think about it. Check out this video and learn about the Cheeto!
