Yakima Radio Employee Shares Chilling Encounter
It’s not uncommon for businesses to be ghost towns on the weekends, especially on a holiday weekend. But what I experienced at the radio station this past Saturday, I will never forget!
Townsquare Media Yakima: Radio Station's Haunted Building?
There are several haunted locations throughout Yakima. The Capitol Theatre, The Sport Center, and of course, the radio stations and offices at 4010 Summitview Ave.
An Off-Air Emergency
This past Sunday (5/24), our AM station went off the air, and I went to the station to assist our engineer in getting it back on. After troubleshooting the issues, it turned out that the problem was at our transmitter and not in the building. So the engineer took off, and I stayed behind, the only one in the building.
The Weirdness Begins
Our radio stations were playing their nighttime syndicated shows, all the studio doors were open with the volumes for each station low (you had to stick your head into them to hear them). I was in the KATS studio, and I heard a very loud (and clear) male voice reading numbers. I immediately think it’s a signal reading from one of our satellite feeds. But the weird part was, it sounded like it was right outside my studio.
I come into the hallway and yell “Hello”, to no one. I then hear footsteps walking away from me in the conjoining hallway. I walk quickly to the main hallway connected to our entrance foyer and yell “Hello” again.

At that point, I hear footsteps again. Walking away from me and turning the corner to our KIT studio. Then, louder than I have ever heard, static comes screaming out of the studio. So loud I thought it would have blown out the speakers.
I start walking towards the studio, and I get the full spine chill and coldness all over my arms.
Remembering previous stories about unusual activity in the station, I decided NOT to walk by the stairway and go back the way I came in order to enter KIT. I turned down the volume of the in-studio monitors and realized that the station was monitoring the AM signal… the one that had been static. It should have been blaring static white noise this whole time. But it didn’t get loud until after the footsteps.
I Can’t Explain It
Working in this building for over 26 years, I’ve experienced my fair share of weird things. Shadow people, weird voices, footsteps, things move, but I’ve always been able to skeptically explain it or what it might be. Maybe I'm tired, not paying attention, radio noise, etc.
