Something incredible happened at lunch Monday. A woman by the name of Margaret Trudeau blew my socks off with her super-personal yet extremely inspiring take on her struggle with bipolar depression. Her delivery was pure with childlike excitement, eyes sparkling as she took you right back to the moment she was snatching up Luis Vuitton bags during a manic episode or the first time she locked eyes with her future husband, former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. I am lucky we didn't grow up in the same time period because I have a feeling we would have been A LOT of trouble together!

Going into the 2018 Leadership Luncheon for the YWCA at the Yakima Convention Center, I am embarrassed to admit that I didn't know who Margaret was or her connection to current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (she's his mother). We get so caught up in our own struggles sometimes we need a kick in the butt, and Margaret was there to deliver it!

For those of you who missed it, just know if you suffer from a mental illness you are not alone. Her story was so honest. The most human thing we can do is try and fix ourselves without help. But that ultimately hurts us the most because we aren't willing to let others know we are struggling with thoughts or feelings when it comes to what's going on in our mind. It's OK to ask for help and I was so moved by this beautiful woman sharing her struggle while smiling about it. She has raised a gorgeous family and even though I don't know the extent of what her children knew at the time, obviously she did something right because her son is pursuing the family business and seems to be doing an exceptional job.
