Veterans Getting Lots of Help at Chuck Austin Place Veterans Center

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Wednesday for the new nearly $18 million Chuck Austin Place Veterans Housing and Services Center in Yakima.

Austin passed away earlier this year but he was remember on Wednesday

Austin died earlier this year at the age of 95-years-old. He was a retired United States Marine who served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He was also a lifetime member of the Yakima VFW Post 379.
Members of the post helped dedicate a special monument located at the entrance to the center that honors Austin on the 246th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. The center is located at South 16th Avenue and Tahoma Avenue

Veterans are getting help everyday at the center

The Chuck Austin Place Veterans Housing and Services Center is already helping local veterans by providing 41 units of supportive housing for homeless veterans and their families. The center is more than a place to live for local veterans and their families it's also a place where veterans can get lots of help. The center also includes dental, health and behavioral health care run by Yakima Neighborhood Health Services.
50% of the funding to make the center possible came from the Low Income Housing Tax Credit.

Austin was the oldest living Marine in Yakima before his death

Before his death he was recognized as the oldest living Marine in the Yakima Valley.
Austin helped in the ground breaking ceremonies and was named as the Grand Marshal of the Yakima Sunfair Parade in 2019.
