WTC Hosts Free 1-Day Kids Dance Audition Workshop in East Valley
Do you have a child who frequently mentions that they want to become an actor? There are no official children’s theater companies in the Yakima Valley, but there are hidden gems where your kids can sharpen their acting skills. Enter the Warehouse Theatre Company performance theater group, stage right. They are hosting a 1-day kids’ dance audition workshop in East Valley on Saturday, May 27th.
My daughter, Willow, and I have been to a few plays out at Selah Middle School, and she often tells me she wishes there was a Drama Club at her own middle school. I do, too, after all, it was getting put into middle school Drama Class that helped shape me into the person I am today.
When I told Willow that I signed her up for the dance audition workshop, she goes, “But MOM! I don’t want to DANCE, I want to ACT!”
Little does she know a lot of acting careers often begin with doing dance numbers in local musical theater! I told her I’m pulling the “Mom Card” and that she’s going to this fun and enlightening workshop because it will be very helpful to her in the future when she tries out for the theater.
The WTC Board saw an opening to teach Yakima Valley youths what’s required for acting auditions and a generous grant from the ArtsWA Foundation is allowing them to get started on that goal. Their free class will teach students how to quickly learn dance steps at acting auditions. Kids will learn the basics of reading sheet music in order to learn easy dance steps. This 3-hour one-day workshop will finish with students learning a quick dance routine set to a popular song from the Disney movie, Moana.
This free workshop is being hosted at East Valley High School from 9 a.m. to noon. If your child wants to attend, they have to PRE-register and be in grades 6 thru 12th before they can be admitted to the workshop. Click here for more info.
