Do you only show your mom love on Mother's Day and no other day? Do you only show affection to your significant other on Valentine's Day? Then why would you need a specific date to give you that reason to better yourself?

I tried to think of a date or reason to better yourself for a cause like this. All I could come up with is your wedding day because you wanted to look as good as possible for those wedding photos that you'll post annually on social media to commemorate your anniversary, but aside from that I could think of any.

The main resolutions are usually to get in shape and stop bad habits like smoking. Both are hard to get started in the right direction, they are. When you're accustom to smoking daily as customary as one might drink coffee every morning it's a bad habit to break. I don't smoke or drink coffee but I drink Pepsi as my vice. I've cut back before in the past or have stopped completely for a month or so at a time, but come right back to it later. It's hard to stop.

But don't give a new year that reason to stop if you truly want to.

Think of other reasons. If you desire to get in shape, don't consider it a new year's resolution, more think of how it would improve your lifestyle. Consider it'll give you more energy to play with your kids. Think of how you can finally join your friends in those 5k walk/run events instead of sitting it out because you don't want to embarrass yourself getting winded after half a mile. I know I would.

My other issue with new year's resolutions is that they can (and often times are) broken. Then you wait it out all the way until next year to start over. Veering off your path happens from time to time. Maybe if you're trying to watch what you eat you end up eating you shouldn't have for your diet but you did anyways for any reason. No problem, get back on track when you can, but don't wait a year. That's just odd.

I recently stopped drinking alcohol. I have a different mindset than most, but I stopped because I just stepped buying it. If I don't have it available, I won't drink it. Simple! It may not be as easy for some, but it's worked for me for the past 5 months and think of all the money I've saved. I'm trying to be smarter with my money, but not a new year's resolution, just something I wanted to start doing for myself.

So, if you need to stop smoking or want to get in shape, that's awesome, but do it for you, not for a resolution.
