Did You Know the Yakima Valley Trolleys are a National Treasure?

The weather is absolutely gorgeous outside, truly a perfect time to take a trip, but before you trek across the country to see a national treasure did you know there is one right here in the Yakima Valley? Our Yakima Valley Trolleys are on the National Registry and are still rideable to this very day!

Yakima Valley Trolley Facts

The Yakima Valley Trolleys operate on the tracks of the former Yakima Valley Transportation Company (YVT Co) in Yakima, Washington, U.S.A. The YVT is listed on the National Register of Historic Places because it is the last authentic, all-original, turn-of-the-century interurban electric railroad in the United States. The degree to which the complete YVT system has been preserved is unsurpassed.

The tracks were built in 1907 and trains have operated on those tracks every year since, a grand total of 115 years so far, thanks to the love and commitment from the Yakima Valley Trolleys team, its volunteers, and generous donations from the community.

I love finding out about the day-to-day operations of the trolleys. There is so much work that goes into making sure these beauties stay fit, checking tracks and repairs, on top of tours held for the community. Yes, that's right, you can currently take the same ride our local passengers took 115 years ago, on the same trolleys that ran in this area.

Current Schedule

Normally, there are two routes. One in Yakima and the other heading out to Selah, however, this is why I wanted to help spread the word

We are once again temporarily suspending Selah trips due to a broken rail in the crossing at Fruitvale Avenue. Apparently, some of the asphalt crumbled away and something hit the rail and bent it, making it a hazard. So the street department has to remove the section of bent rail and fill the space in with asphalt. Hence we are unable to make Selah trips until we can repair the track.

So, as we wait for repairs to wrap up and announcements are made for when the Selah service will resume everyone can take advantage of the Pine Street route for its weekend runs!

Schedule for Operating Days

Trolleys leave the Carbarn at South 3rd Avenue and Pine Street in Yakima approximately every hour on the hour from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM when we are operating on the Pine Street line.

The fair for all ages is $5 and so worth it.

Raising Funds

The Yakima Valley Trolleys team prides themselves on maintaining the fantastic fleet of railway cars in their stable and they've got their eyes set on a rare Brill Trolley, the same type of trolley first used in Yakima in 1908! Cool Fact, there are only five of this type of trolley in the entire United States. She doesn't come cheap though! The Yakima Valley Trolleys have obtained a $150,000 grant to fund half the cost of the restoration and are needing to match that in funds so if you are wanting to donate or know someone who would love to keep history alive.
