Damn you, COVID-19!

Another in the long and ever-growing list of coronavirus cancellations, the latest casualty is the annual Moxee Hop Festival in East Valley. According to a post on the Moxee Hop Festival Beer Garden Facebook page the 2020 event is not going to happen this summer.

Usually, the fest celebrating the valley's abundant hop crop put on by the East Valley Community Enhancement Association (EVCEA) occurs on the first full weekend in August -- this year's was to run August 6 - 8.

The event was originally created in the late 1940's as a way to fund a community swimming pool to keep kids from swimming -- and drowning! -- in irrigation canals during the hot summer. It eventually fizzled out over a few decades before being revived in the late 1990's and has been one of the cornerstone community and family events for the entire Yakima Valley since. Folks come from all around Central Washington and many from out of town to take part in what is truly a slice of Americana.

No parade, no fireworks, no 5k fun run, no live music emanating from Moxee City Park all weekend long until well into the night for an entire weekend.

Hey, at least we still have beer that those hops are most known for.

Please enjoy the photo gallery showing many images from recent hop fests from years gone by (you may just find yourself in one!) and help us in saying "so long" to the 2020 Moxee Hop Festival. We already cannot wait until next year!
