Is the first freeze of the fall coming to Portland sooner than you might think?

Typically, it starts getting chilly in late October/early November. I've been monitoring the weather forecast for Portland to see if the temps will be dipping down below freezing but fortunately, that's not happening this week and probably not the next one either.

But winter is coming! So say professional climate predictors (that's why we pay them the big bucks), and so does Axios.

Even if you have some good snow tires and chains, driving over the passes during freezing weather can sometimes turn into a white knuckle driving experience, so if you plan on traveling through Oregon on your way to Portland, or even if you're heading down to California, it's best to keep up with the weather forecast before you leave the house.

Looking at the current 10-day forecast, we can see that the temps in Portland are cooling off a few degrees each day. This cooling trend is going to lead up to the chill factor - 0 degrees Celsius and 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

WHEN TO EXPECT THE FIRST FREEZE IN PORTLAND

We are less than a month away from Oregon's studded tires law, but don't put them on before November 1st, otherwise you'll be eligible for a $200 fine for jacking up the roads!

When driving through Oregon on your way to Portland this fall and winter, check this handy Oregon website for road conditions and whatnot.

Thanks to La Niña doing her thing, Portland is expecting freezing temps likely before we reach Thanksgiving, and possibly before Veterans Day on November 11th.

This means you need to get your snow tires ready if you don't have all-season or traction ones. If your car needs chains, practice putting them on while the weather is still nice so that when the freeze comes, you'll be an expert at putting those bad boys on!

Hey, the next time you're visiting Portland (or anywhere in Oregon for that matter), stop to grab a bite to eat at a diner, dive, or drive-in that's Chef Guy Fieri-approved! Enjoy some good eats, for the road!

Each one of these Oregon restaurants were featured on Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on the Food Network!
