Take A Look: Sears Store in Union Gap To Shut Its Doors Mid-December

When news came earlier this year that Sears would be closing many of their stores, we feared that we'd lose ours located in the Valley Mall. Sadly, it is one of the locations on the chopping block. As of this writing, it looks to be closing its doors mid-December of 2022. With roughly a month left, I took a stroll through the store that WAS packed wall to wall with everything you could ever need.

Memory of the Yakima Sears

I remember coming here when I was younger and having to sit and wait to get my picture taken with my brother. I remember shopping for a new oven when our 70's-tastic olive green one finally "burned out". I even remember getting my first tool box here. Feeling so manly that I was now a "Craftsman!" That was an awesome 2018. (I'm joking, I got my first tool box from Sears in '88). I used it as a portable toy box. I was proud to be a Craftsman back then, and I still use many of the tools that I've purchased from Sears since. It will be sad to not have that option available to me.

How Much Longer Will Sears in Yakima Be Open?

At least, that's what I expected. The future seems to be a little more positive than it was when I first walked into Sears. The store was bare, lots of clothing still, but no where near the "bursting at the seams" store that it once was. I talked to one of the workers who informed me, that she believed the last day that the store would be open would be December 18th. Then she let me in on what's coming.

The Future of Sears in Yakima

The worker was under the impression, that coming in September of 2023, the store would become a "Sears Concept Store", focusing more on attire (she mentioned men's shoes) and less on furniture. Some of the other space would either be rented out by Sears, or remodeled by the Valley Mall to make smaller shops. Sounds promising.
