Hasselback Apples are the Perfect Intro to Fall Baking
I don't know about you but I have had a hankering baked goods. Baking bread still alludes me, the mess that comes with making my own pastry dough currently isn't the desire. It's more the smell and the eating of the desserts so I am really searching for relatively quick and easy things to make, not too many ingredients, so when I came across a recipe for Hasselback apples, I was in!
You have probably heard of Hasselback potatoes, or maybe not. I asked the hubs and he didn't know what I was talking about, he is also a freak about potatoes so I will be adding that side to an upcoming dinner soon.
Basically, you an apple, peel it, cut it in half and take out the core. No worries if you have no fancy tools, I don't either so a small spoon will do the trick. For some reason I get really excited and tend to skip over some of the instructions so my first attempt was missing the oats and the second attempt I missed the fact you are supposed to peel your apples, I see why but if you forget this step, I can attest, they are still the bomb.
- 1 or two apples
- Baking dish
- Cooking spray
- 4 Tablespoons brown sugar (divided)
- 2 1/2 Tablespoons melted butter (divided)
- 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon (divided)
- 2 Tablespoons old fashion rolled oats
- 1 tsp all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp salt
- Vanilla Bean Ice Cream or whipping cream top with when serving
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees
- Wash, peel, core then slice apples with the flat side down almost all the way through but leaving the bottom completely unsliced
- Spray a pan with cooking spray and place each apple, flat side down in the pan
- Put together 1 TBS of melted butter with 1 TBS Brown Sugar and 1/2 tsp sugar, mix and spread over the apples,
- Cover with tin foil and cook for 10 minutes once the oven is ready.
- Remove the tin foil (careful the steam could get you if you aren't paying attention) and place back in the oven for another 10 minutes or until the apples are soft
- Remove from the oven and let them cool for 10 minutes
- Combine the rest of your 3 TBS of sugar, 1 1/2 TBS of melted butter, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, your oats, flour, and salt. Fan out the apples and cover each with your delicious sugary oat topping
- Pop back in the oven for 10 minutes and then 2 minutes on broil.
- Get your pretty bowl ready and top with ice cream or whipped cream. Bomb!
